Help Coco and You Help My Kin…

One of my younger cousins, on my mom’s side, reached out to me recently with a little sadness. At the beginning of another new chapter in working toward a better life and a fresh start, my cousin will set out to relocate from the Philippines to Australia to reunite with her brother and sister and their young families and energies. All is bright, hopeful and well on the horizon save for one difficulty. What is to become of her sweet dog, her family member, her furry support that no one wanted? This is the ongoing bluesy story of Coco the mixed-breed pup.

My cousin, who I will refer to here as Honey in order to protect her identity, along with her immediate family, has lived through much bitter-sweetness in the past twenty or more years. As a family they’ve lived through so much upheaval. I cannot go into much detail because while it does offer more insight into the importance of keeping Coco close, it can all be too triggering and re-traumatizing for everyone involved. But I can say something that many people will still understand. Be they rabbits, cats, dogs or starting a human family, caring for and cultivating bonds between humans and other living creatures are innate acts of self care. They are our attempts to adopt and embrace life, to move forward, progress and find daily healing from the enormity of life’s impact. Children, loved ones, and…
